Anna Wheeler Awarded Scholarship
Anna Clare Wheeler, daughter of Dick and Debbie Wheeler of Ramsey, was awarded a five hundred dollar scholarship at the July meeting of the Fayette County Hospital and Long Term Care Auxiliary.

Anna says, " I plan to attend Indiana Wesleyan University for two years in pre-pharmacy. After that I hopefully will attend the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy." She says, "The most important reason to go into pharmacy is the chance for service. It is rewarding to be helpful. I want to make a difference in people's lives."

Anna was the co-Valedictorian of Rosamond Christian Academy in Rosamond.

President Ginny Pratt presented her the check at the monthly meeting of the auxiliary.

Plaque honors Officer Terry Emerick
State Senator Frank Watson presented a plaque Tuesday honoring the 29-year-old Illinois Commerce Commission officer who was killed in the line of duty on May 25, 1994.

"The plaque is one way to acknowledge this young man who served the people of Illinois, law enforcement and his family in such an honorable way," said Watson. "The plaque also makes note of the Terry J. Emerick Memorial Highway along State Route 185 between Hillsboro and Vandalia." The ceremony for that dedication was held in November.

Watson presented the plaque to Officer Emerick's wife, Connie and son, Noah. It will be displayed at the Indian Springs Golf Course clubhouse in Fillmore.

Officer Emerick was killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 70 near Vandalia. He was a native of Vandalia and before serving with the Illinois Commerce Commission; Emerick was with the Hillsboro Police Department and served as a deputy and probation officer in Fayette County.

"The highway dedication is fitting for someone whose professional life was dedicated to making our roads and highways safer," said Watson

Receives Degree
Sarah Elisabeth Carruthers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Carruthers, of Ramsey, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business with a concentration in medical office administration. The commencement ceremony was held at Pensacola Christian College on Wednesday, May 7. As a result of earning a B average or higher, Sarah was named to the Dean's List.

FCH Employee of the month
Greg Starnes, CEO of Fayette County Hospital and Long Term announced that Joanna Savage of the Progressive Rehab Unit is the Employee for the Month of July 2008.

Her nomination form reads: Joanna is an outstanding employee of FCH & LTC. She is always dependable, professional, hard working, and a very valued team player. She exceeds expectations in all areas of her job. She goes above and beyond her job duties every day with little things for her patients like a hair wash or curl, a shave, a back rub, a hug, or just by listening. Joanna never leaves any task undone, whether it is technically part of her job or not.

In addition to a plaque, balloon, cake, preferred parking spot and $50 gift certificate, Joanna's name will be included in the nominations for the Employee Recognition Award at the 2008 banquet.

Announce Engagement
Kate Beaman and Jonathan Friesner (a former resident of Taylorville area) with parents James and Sharon Beaman and Darryl Friesner and Faye Peters, all of Emily, MN wish to announce the engagement and marriage of Jon and Kate on August 8, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. at the Emily Wesleyan Church of Emily, MN.

Kate is working on a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul. Jon is currently finishing a Criminal Justice Degree at Rasmussen College in Brooklyn Park, MN.

Grandparents are Ron and Nancy Beaman of St. Paul, Jim and Olive Slye of Emily, Bill and Janet Friesner of Vandalia, David and Mary Ellen Hughes of Emily.

Locks of Love
Leah (9) and Erin (5) Borntreger, Auburn, donated 10" and 21" respectively to Locks of Love. They are the daughters of Scott and Michelle Borntreger and the granddaughters of Tom and Jean Moreland of Ramsey and Ellen Borntreger of St. Elmo. Tracy (Berhends) Schmid of Auburn, formerly of Brownstown, had the privilege of cutting Erin's hair. This is Leah's second time of making such a generous donation.

With the Military
Army Pvt. Jeremiah W. Milligan has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

He is the brother of Sarah Rowcliff and Joe Milligan, both of Vandalia.

Justin Paul Beck
Darren and Jessica Beck of Ramsey are parents of their sixth child, a son born at 5:13 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008 in Greenville, Regional Hospital. He weighed eight pounds, thirteen ounces and was 20 inches long. He has been named Justin Paul. The mother is the former Jessica Blair. Grandparents are Darrel Lee and Goldie Beck of Herrick, Dennis and Brenda Blair of Ramsey. Great-grandparents are Betty Worker of Ramsey, Don Blair of Vandalia, Charlie Hinton of Pana. Welcoming him home are siblings Kara, Darien, Abbigail, Ian and Landon.

Retirement Party
Members of United Methodist churches in Ramsey, Herrick and Tower Hill gathered at Ramsey Lake State Park on Sunday afternoon to show appreciation for pastor Gene Colthurst and wife Sharon, as they retired from ministry. They are seated on the right end of the park bench with a pair of angels provided by the three-church parish. Reverend Steve Livengood is the new parish minister, saying goodbyes at his former charge on Sunday.

July 7th Deadline for 3 on 3 Soccer Tournament
The deadline is fast approaching for Pana Soccer League's fourth annual 3 on 3 Soccer Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, July 19th and the deadline to register teams is July 7th!

There are three age divisions: boys and girls 2nd-3rd grade, boys and girls 4th-5th grade and boys and girls 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Grades are determined by the year entering in the fall. Teams can have a maximum of five players. Sign-in starts at 8:00 a.m. and play begins at 9:00 a.m. The tournament will be held in Kitchell Park.

Forms must be postmarked by the July 7th deadline to guarantee t-shirt and play. Trophies will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place teams in each division. Registration forms can be obtained at Pana News, Peoples Bank & Trust of Pana, First National Bank of Pana, Pizza Man or Tan Lines or by calling Tim Karbach at 562-4073.
