TOWER GETS ANOTHER CHANCE

Ten persons met Thursday evening, Jan. 26, in Village Hall to discuss the sensibility of keeping the 1922 railroad tower on life support. Consensus was that the building itself should be preserved if possible and even open it to the public when appropriate.

Primary need, enthusiasts agreed, is to create interest and find an organizer to take charge who has new visions.

In the meantime, Andy Lay volunteered to keep mowing the grounds. Andy Craig and  Rick Zahnle will tuck-point the chimney. Gutters must be replaced. A contact list was prepared to allow the public to tour the tower.

A file cabinet has been placed in the Public Library for anyone to read or research railroad and tower history.

It was decided to meet three times a year pending a need to meet earlier.

LA NINA WINTER

A tall red barn near Herrick highlights icicles and tiny streaks of icy rain during the January 25 weather which was another of winter’s worst days in this non-winter season. With a wind chill below 30 degrees, ice kept accumulating all afternoon but did not hamper travel as did the severe black ice event just five days earlier. Warmer temperature and heavier rain that night melted ice while sending January’s total rainfall above the normal mark by nearly a half-inch. Was January really “warm”? Find the January weather synopsis on page 3.

TALK ABOUT RAMSEY DAZE NEXT TUESDAY

Citizens are trying to pull something together for Ramsey Daze this year in the absence of Josh Miller and Sean McDonald.

Trinity Amusements has anchored Ramsey Daze many years and intends to set up in Lions Park the weekend of May 31- June 2, with or without Ramsey Daze events.

There will be a meeting next Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Village Hall, starting at 6:30. Persons interested in usual Daze events such as Little Miss and Mister, the parade, evening music, even the food stand, are urged to attend. Even a partial celebration will maintain the annual event to help it resume in glory in 2013.

You may call Charlotte at 618-292-2237 for information. Leave a message.

BOARD TALK

In a continuing effort to inform citizens of nuisance ordinances within Ramsey corporate limits, the Village Board health / property committee submits these views:

“No person shall permit any garbage or trash to accumulate on their premises or private property. It is hereby declared to be a nuisance and it shall be unlawful for the owner or occupant of real estate to refuse or neglect to remove the garbasge or debgris,” according to the ordinance.

If you have an accumulation of trash on yopur property, the village dump is open every Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. No charge for Ramsey village/township residents.

The village is not required to give warning before issuing a citation for trash accumulation.

The board hopes citizens will show pride in Ramsey and comply with the ordinance.

Look for this month’s water bill in an envelope, which will include an annual, mandatory survey.
